Today, Algeria and Cape Verde jointly commemorate their independence. 

On the flag of Algeria, the green represents Islam, the white represents purity and peace and the red represents freedom. The crescent and the star are both Islamic symbols.

While on the flag of Cape Verde, the circle of ten yellow stars tops the whole, representing the 10 islands of the country. However, the circle arrangement represents the nation and its unity. The stripes symbolise (from bottom to top): the sea (blue), hope (white), the blood of the independence struggle (red), peace (white) and the sky (blue).
