On Wednesday, Angolan miners took a rare, flawless pink diamond from a mine in the country's northeast. According to the Australian mining corporation that runs the site, it is reportedly thought to be the biggest mineral discovery in the world in the last 300 years.

The Lulo Rose

The 170-carat diamond has been called "The Rose of Lulo" after the mine in northern Angola from whence it was mined. According to a statement to investors from the Lucapa Diamond Company, it is one of the biggest pink diamonds ever found.

The Angolan government, the mine's partner, praised the "historic" finding of this class IIa diamond, which includes especially rare and pure stones.

According to Angola's Mineral Resources Minister Diamantino Azevedo, "This record-breaking and beautiful pink diamond from Lulo continues to prove that Angola is an essential player on the global diamond mining stage."

The stone will be offered for sale in international auctions, presumably for an absurd sum. Similar pink diamonds have in the past fetched record prices, even though the "Rose of Lulo" will still need to be cut and polished to attain its full worth, a procedure in which a stone might lose 50% of its weight.

The 59.6-carat "Pink Star" diamond brought in US$71.2 million at auction in Hong Kong in 2017. It continues to be the most valuable diamond in history as of this point.
