Ceres: High levels of toxins in apple juice cartons

Mould is contaminating Ceres apple juice. Yet the product is sold in Kenya and in member countries of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA). Many consumers suffer from poisoning after drinking the drinks. This news will bring down the product's popularity with customers due to contamination by its mould toxins. South African food and drink manufacturer Pioneer Foods has been forced to recall its Ceres apple juice brands.

Patulin: Very dangerous moulds

The recalled brands were found to have high levels of patulin. According to the World Health Organization, patulin is a naturally occurring toxin created by certain moulds that can be found in apples and apple products. Its consumption, exceeding 50μg/, causes nausea, gastrointestinal disorders and vomiting, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).

COMESA calls for people's vigilance on this product

COMESA warns the general public to avoid buying or consuming the recalled products. "If the above products have already been purchased, consumers are advised to return the products where they were purchased for a refund or replacement."

Yesterday afternoon, the public saw that the products were still on sale at several outlets in Nairobi.
