The conflict in Ukraine and Russia's threat to European leaders have elevated the energy problem to the top of the political priority list. In light of this critical situation, Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, personally traveled to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, on July 18 to make a big announcement about a new deal to quadruple Azerbaijani gas imports in order to diversify the EU's supply sources. This action puts the EU in a new position of dependency on a state with belligerent intentions, in addition to continuing the manic race to pillage the resources of our planet.

For anybody who is aware of how the dictatorship in charge of Azerbaijan utilizes the money it receives from the gas rent, it would be an understatement to say that this declaration is terrifying. It not only keeps the same caste in power for more than 30 years at the top of a dictatorship that engages in every imaginable form of human rights violation, but it also takes part in the maddening armaments race that funds the extermination of Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh or the Republic of Armenia. In addition, it is a reaction from the past, going against the demands for a more independent European Union and the ecological transition.

In light of this, we implore the European Commission to renounce its project with Azerbaijan and the European Union's heads of state and government, as well as the European Parliament, to abstain from ratifying any agreement that would result in a switch from reliance on Russian gas to reliance on Azerbaijani gas, under any pretext.

Powerful threat
The 44-day conflict in the fall of 2020 served as an example of Azerbaijan's dreadful plans. In addition to using military force to its advantage, Turkey has sent jihadists to assist the Azerbaijani army, a practice condemned by President Emmanuel Macron, used phosphorus bombs, which are illegal due to the harm they cause to people and the environment, and tortured prisoners of war being held in Azerbaijani jails in flagrant violation of international law.
