Central China has been hit by rainfall in recent days. Its capital, Zhengzhou, has been the most damaged. The devastating floods have killed 51 people, according to the latest report from local authorities on Friday 23 July.

Heavy flooding and bad weather have hit the European and Asian continents this month, including Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and now China.

Friday's update shows that the total number of people who have died as a result of the heavy rains in China has reached 51. Previously, the death toll was only 33.

Many bodies may still be trapped inside vehicles submerged in the rains.

According to reports, China's third most populous province, Henan, with a population of around 100 million, has been hit in recent days by historic rains that have turned streets to mud.

More than 400,000 people evacuated

More than 400,000 people have been forced to evacuate as a result of the bad weather. Firefighters and rescue workers were mobilising in Zhengzhou with huge pumps on Friday to clear the water from the streets.

The damage amounts to about 65.5 billion yen or 8.5 billion euros, according to estimates by the municipal authorities.

The heavy rains are now in the north of the province. According to AFP, they have caused catastrophic flooding. Ninety kilometres from Zhengzhou is the city of Xinxiang.  This city and its surroundings seem to be cut off from the world at the moment. The Wei River has overflowed its banks, according to state television CCTV.

The bad weather that is happening at the moment, whether in the European part of the world or on the Asian continent, is nothing more than climate change.
