Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been conditionally released on medical grounds. The South African prison authorities accepted this reason on Sunday 05 September 2021.

As a reminder, Mr Jacob Zuma, 79 years old, has been incarcerated since 08 July for having escaped justice.  He refused to appear before the commission of enquiry into state corruption during his presidency in 2009 to 2018. As a result, he was sentenced to 15 months in prison. But for a month, more precisely on 06 August, he was hospitalised.

From now on, he will be able to return home as soon as he leaves the hospital, according to the explanation of a prison official.

The parole takes effect Sunday and the former president will serve the remainder of his sentence outside prison, but may have to do community service when he is released from hospital.

According to the DCS in a statement, "Mr Zuma's conditional release on medical grounds means that he will serve the remainder of his sentence within the community prison system, where he will be subject to a number of conditions and supervision until the end of his sentence. »

The conditional release was imposed following a medical report received by the Prison Service. According to the statement, Mr Zuma underwent undisclosed surgery on 14 August 2021 and remained in hospital for the immediate future.

According to his former spokesperson, Mzwanele Manyi confirmed that Jacob Zuma's imprisonment had worsened his health.  « It has had an exponential impact in terms of his deteriorating condition," he said. However, Mzwanele did not reveal what illness Jacob Zuma is suffering from.
