GHANA: MPs pray LGBTQ+ activities are not legalized

LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) is starting to take place all over the world. Some countries have even accepted and legalized same-sex marriage as a matter of freedom.  It is also beginning to spread in Africa. Yet in Ghana, MPs are gathering and praying to curb their activities and its legalization in the country.

It was a spiritual session by MPs before the passage of a bill to criminalize the activities of these communities.

Alban Bagbin, the speaker of parliament, had said a few days earlier that urgent steps to curb LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana were being taken. "Consultations with stakeholders are underway and the results will feed into a bill that will eventually be passed by parliament," he said.

Bad influence for society

The opening of an LGBTQ+ office in Accra has caused much controversy. The aim was to legitimize the activities of supporters.

However, the establishment of the office caused both religious and human rights controversy. As a result, the police closed the office in the face of these ideas.

Some mainstream people believe that people should be allowed to express their sexual differences. However, they feel that LGBTQ+ people are unjust and against the norms and morals of society.

Several communities have opposed attempts to legalize LGBTQ+ people, including gay rights activists, the National Peace Council, the GPCC (Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council), the National Chief Imam.

Moreover, President Akufo-Addo, reserves his verdict that he will not legalize LGBTQ+ people during his governance. "I have said it before, and let me emphasize it again, that it will not be under the presidency of Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo that same-sex marriage will be legal," he warned.
