Haiti in mourning! President Jovenel Moïse ended his presidency early. President Jovenel Moïse, 53 years old, was assassinated at his home by a commando, Wednesday morning, July 7, at around 1 am.

Prime Minister Claude Joseph announced the death of the president "At around one o'clock in the morning, on the night of Tuesday 6 to Wednesday 7 July 2021, a group of unidentified individuals, some of whom spoke in Spanish, attacked the private residence of the President of the Republic and mortally wounded the Head of State," he said in a statement.

The statement said the assassins are foreigners who speak English and Spanish. And they attacked the president's residence.

The president's wife was also a victim of the attack. She was injured and hospitalized, according to reports.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister condemns this act as heinous, inhuman and barbaric.

Following this incident that the country is facing, Claude Joseph called on the population to remain calm. He also assured the people that the security situation in the country is under control.

The White House condemned this "terrible" assassination while Boris Johnson said he was "shocked" by this "odious act". The Dominican Republic has ordered the "immediate closure" of its border with Haiti.

Haiti is plagued by insecurity and in particular by kidnappings for ransom perpetrated by gangs enjoying virtual impunity. This situation has led to Jovenel Moïse being accused of inaction in the face of the crisis.

Faced with this situation, the UN Security Council, the United States and Europe consider it a priority to hold free and transparent legislative and presidential elections before the end of the year.

As a reminder, President Jovenel Moïse was elected president in 2016 and took office on 7 February 2017.
