The leader of a cult in eastern Kenya has surrendered to police who have been searching for him since the deaths of four followers whom he allegedly told to fast in order to "meet Jesus".

Makenzie Nthenge, pastor of the Good News International Church in eastern Kenya, surrendered to police on Saturday 15 April after several days on the run. The pastor who caused the death of his four congregants and 11 other followers of the Good News International Church led by Makenzie Nthenge were hospitalised in a serious condition after being rescued in Shakahola forest, near the town of Malindi, after he put them on a dry fast for several days "to meet Jesus.

According to local media, Makenzie Nthenge was arrested and charged last month after two children starved to death in their parents' care. He was later released on bail of 100,000 Kenyan shillings (about 670 euros).
