Libya: postponement of the first visit of the Head of Government to Benghazi

On Sunday evening, a statement by government spokesman Mohamad Hamouda announced the postponement of the Council of Ministers that should have taken place this Monday in the east of the country, in Benghazi. This Council was to mark the first visit of the new Prime Minister, Abdelhamid Dbeibah, in the east of the country.

Without giving any reason for this postponement, Mohamad Hamouda just added in his statement that preparations for a future date are already underway. Following this announcement, the security team in charge of preparing the visit and members of his government were turned back upon landing at Benghazi airport by local authorities on site.

For the reconstruction of Libya, Mr. Dbeibah wishes to extricate himself from a decade of conflict since the fall of the regime of Muammar Gaddafi, marked by rivalries between the West and East of the country. For him, holding a Council of Ministers in Benghazi is a very big step towards this reunification. And this visit, which he should have carried out, would have been supposed to close this chapter and give birth to a new unified executive.

Therefore, it is hoped that this Council of Ministers will take place in the next few days in order to establish institutional stability in the country until the national elections in December.
