Madagascar: a 15-day extension of the state of health emergency and new measures against the Coronavirus

This Sunday evening, the President of the Malagasy Republic, Andry Rajoelina, addressed again the population during a televised intervention on the national channel. To this end, he announced the extension of the state of health emergency for 15 days, and stated new measures against Covid-19 for the next few days.

First wave of vaccines to arrive on May 7

According to the statement of the Minister of Health, Pr. Jean Louis Rakotovao, the first wave of Covid-19 vaccines will arrive in the country on May 7, 2021. According to him and the President of the Republic, these doses will be administered to target audiences such as people over 70 years old, medical staff and a category of vulnerable people with chronic diseases such as diabetes.

Madagascar recently joined the COVAX initiative to obtain these vaccine.

Closure of land borders in new region

According to the statement of Mr. Andry Rajoelina, the regions of Vakinakaratra, Haute Matsiatra and Androy will also be closed this Wednesday, May 5.

Apart from that, the national flights, carried out by the airline company "Tsaradia", have until this Wednesday to repatriate the people who want to return home. Then after this date, all flights will cease in order to stop the spread of coronavirus in the regions

Back to school for exam classes

Stopped since the Easter vacations, classes will resume this week for students in exam classes (CEPE, BEPC, Baccalauréat), located in the regions that are subject to closure. However, classes will resume in schools, colleges and high schools, as well as in universities in other regions.

Opening of new CTCs

Faced with the lack of beds in the Covid-19 care structures, a new Covid-19 Treatment Center (CTC-19) will be opened this Monday, May 3, at the ISTS Andoharanofotsy, at the home of the nuns of the Daughters of the Heart of Mary community. Besides that, the Panorama hotel will also open its doors to coronavirus patients, and will become a "hospital hotel".

CTCs are also opened in Antsirabe, Fianaratsoa and Tolagnaro to welcome the sick.
