Mali's transitional president, Bah N'Daw, and his prime minister, Moctar Ouane, resigned on Wednesday 26 May 2021, after being stripped of their posts for not respecting the transitional charter by his vice-president, Colonel Assimi Goïta, in front of the international mediation mission currently in Mali, the media reported.

"Bah N'Daw, the Malian president, and Moctar Ouane, his prime minister, resigned before the international mediation mission currently in Mali. Negotiations are underway for their release and the formation of a new government," said the special adviser to the vice-president of the Malian transition, Baba Cissé.

But according to a member of the international mediation mission, speaking on condition of anonymity, the president of the Malian transition and his prime minister had already resigned before their arrival in Kati, where they were held.

If the West African mediation does not succeed, "we will take sanctions against all those who prevent the transition process from developing," warned the head of French diplomacy Jean-Yves Le Drian, whose country is committing about 5,000 soldiers in the Sahel and has requested a meeting of the Security Council with some countries such as Niger, a neighbour of Mali.

He said that these sanctions will not only be the work of France, but also of "African states, (of) all actors".

In a statement issued on Monday evening, African organisations, Minusma, France, the United States and others warned that they would not accept a fait accompli like a forced resignation.

Since the thunder of their arrest, the president and the transitional prime minister have been held incommunicado in the military camp of Kati, where President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, re-elected a year earlier, was also led by the military junta in August 2020 and forced to announce his resignation.

On Tuesday 25 May 2021, the vice-president of the Malian transition dismissed its president and prime minister for not respecting the transition charter.
