Russia says African leaders will travel to Moscow next month or early July as part of a peace initiative for the Ukrainian conflict announced by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The African mission led by six African leaders to discuss a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine will visit Russia in June or July, Russian diplomatic chief Sergei Lavrov announced Thursday.

Ramaphosa said Tuesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had both agreed to receive the six-member mission, which will travel to Moscow and Kiev.

Lavrov was speaking at a press conference with Jeje Odongo, his Ugandan counterpart, one of the countries participating in the initiative.

Other members of the delegation unveiled by Ramaphosa are the presidents of the Republic of Congo, Egypt, Senegal, South Africa and Zambia.

He added that Russia was looking forward to seeing the "concrete initiatives" proposed by the delegation. Ramaphosa did not specify the timing of the visit or other details, saying only that the conflict has been "devastating" and that Africa is "also suffering a lot".
