Russia imposes law on French champagnes

Is this a champagne war? The French are now obliged to follow the instructions imposed by Russia if they want to continue exporting their champagnes. The condition is to put a "sparkling wine" label as indications.

President Vladimir Putin signed a new amendment to the law governing the consumption of alcoholic beverages on Friday 2 July.

As a result, only Russian producers are allowed to label their bottles with the word "champagne".  While champagne from France is considered like other imported wines. Indeed, French champagne should be called " sparkling wine” according to the publication of the website Le Monde.

Bottles of champagne without a change of name will be judged as counterfeit.

Activities under threat for exporters

This new legislation imposed by Russia is a blow to French producers in the sector. They are afraid of the consequences of this designation. According to reports, they have been fighting for some years to protect this qualification, which is a threat to their activities worldwide.

Indeed, the champagne houses of Moët Hennessy had to stop its exports to Russia this weekend. But the group said on Sunday, July 4, that it would resume deliveries as soon as possible, given the obligation to add the words "sparkling wine" on the back of the bottles.

This new certification is estimated to cost several million roubles, according to a letter to Russian customers.

According to information, 13% of the 50 million liters of sparkling wines and champagnes imported into Russia come from France.
