Rwanda - Burundi: towards a normalization of relations

Rwandan President Paul Kagame told a two-day meeting of the extended executive council of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF-Inkotanyi) on Saturday that Rwanda and Burundi are currently in the process of normalizing their relations.

Paul Kagame took the opportunity during this meeting to put an end to suspicions about the conflict between the two countries. He explained that "with Burundi, we are on the right track. Together, we are seeking to resolve the problems between us and get our relations back on track. Burundi has shown interest in doing so and we are doing the same. "

Then he continued his communication by saying that Rwanda wants to establish peace and freedom to continue to have its country developed, without interference from Kigali. He then added that "we do not want to hinder anyone and we do not want anyone to stand in our way. Our goal is to continue to do the right thing and that protects us from those who wish us harm. What makes us special is that the solutions to our challenges have been unique. "

It is worth noting that since 2015, tensions have arisen between Rwanda and Burundi. At the base, Bujumbura accused Kigali of being behind a movement of refugees, mostly from the Tutsi tribe, which aimed to overthrow the regime of Pierre Nkurunziza. For the former Burundian president, Pierre Nkurunziza, Rwanda is the main factor in the destabilization of his country and thus considers it an enemy.

Rwanda has rejected these accusations, and has taken a dim view of Mr. Nkurunziza's statement that he considers Rwanda an enemy. Therefore, the re-election of Pierre Nkurunziza in 2015 was a disappointment for Rwanda, and the accession to power in Burundi in 2020 of Evariste Ndayishimiye did not change much.
