The Somali government announced on Thursday, May 27, that national elections will be held within two months. These elections will first of all involve the election of members of parliament, who will in turn elect the future president of Somalia.

To ease the tensions that have plagued Somalia in recent weeks, President Framajo has tasked Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble with organizing the elections as soon as possible.

To this end, Mr. Hussein held a meeting of all political leaders, which began on Saturday and ended on Thursday with an official ceremony and the reading of a communiqué. Reading the communiqué, Deputy Minister of Information Abdirahman Yusuf said, "The national consultative forum has agreed that the elections will be held within 60 days.

For the Prime Minister, this decision is part of Somalia's history. In a speech, he said it was "a historic day" because the discussions were marked by "respect, patience and compromise. Continuing, Mr. Hussein also said he is "committed to overseeing the process for fair and inclusive elections and calls on the parties to forgive and open their hearts to each other.

For President Framajo, this is a "victory for all Somalis everywhere.

However, the exact dates of the national elections are yet to be determined by the committee in charge of organizing the elections, the FEIT.

By way of background, in mid-April there were several developments in Somalia. Tensions and violent clashes occurred throughout the country, mainly in Mogadishu. These tensions were caused by the two-year extension of President Mohamed Abdukkahi Mohamed's term of office, which should have expired on February 8, and which was held without an election.
