Sudanese refugees flock to Central African Republic

Sudanese generals have been fighting for more than two months, with the result that thousands of their compatriots are pouring into neighboring countries - more than 350,000, according to the UN.

In the Central African Republic, they number 14,000, according to data from the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Programme.

These people will have to be relocated quickly, and we're running out of time to make sure the rain doesn't find them here in Am Dafok. Otherwise, it will be difficult," explains Bobo Kitoko, Data Management Associate for UNHCR.

Located in the Vakaga region of north-eastern Central African Republic, Am Dafock is an area that records significant rainfall even during the driest month. The rainy season, which lasts from April to October, makes access and delivery of aid extremely difficult.

The majority of new arrivals are women and children from Nyala in Sudan. Pastor Ismaïl Ibrahim Mykaz Totoa fled with his family in search of a peaceful place to live. However, Am Dafock is landlocked and in a fragile security zone.

"We came here, we're just looking for a good place. If we find a good place, a safe place, yes, we'll stay. And we don't know when the war will end either," he stresses.

According to the UNHCR, some 445 million dollars are needed to meet the challenges in this region. Since the beginning of the crisis and the arrival of the first refugees in April, the multiple missions of NGOs have come up against the security issue.
