Tchad: a violent demonstration in the capital

This Tuesday morning, in N'Djamena, a demonstration broke out. Angry Chadian youth took to the streets to challenge the new government.

The demonstrators carried out violent attacks against the military junta on Tuesday. Several roads were barricaded by protesters, who burned tires and French flags. The confrontation was aggressive as it was marked by live ammunition fired by the police, as well as the detonation of tear gas grenades. As a result of all this heckling, there was the loss of five people.

It should be noted that following the appointment of the new Prime Minister, Albert Pahimi Padacké, voices began to rise from the opposition. The opposition and civil society denounced an institutional coup d'état and a dynastic succession to power. As a result, they have called on Chadians to gather on Tuesday to challenge the Military Transitional Council (MTC).

In response to these attacks, the president of the transition, General Mahamat Déby, is trying to ease tensions and spoke on national television. He promoted a dialogue in which he called for the establishment of a National Transitional Council that would represent all provinces.

Currently, this event has provoked reactions from all sides, including France. According to Agence France de Presse (AFP), French President Emmanuel Macron has strongly condemned the repression in Chad, and wants all forms of violence to stop.

After the violent events of Tuesday, yesterday, the opposition re-launched a call for a demonstration.
