No positive response so life in prison continues. The request for release by the lawyers of Nabil Karoui, the former candidate for the 2019 presidential election in Tunisia, was not approved.

Financial corruption

Still held in prison. Nabil Karoui is being prosecuted for financial corruption. The request for his release negotiated by his lawyers was rejected by the indictment chamber of the Tunis Court of Appeal on Wednesday.

Because of a complaint about financial corruption, Karoui was interrogated by Tunisian authorities in August 2019. He was released after serving 2 months in prison, again in connection with corruption. On the same day, the Tunis Court of Appeal started to appeal the decision of his release.

But the court continued to pursue him and finally decided to imprison him on 24 December 2019. Despite the detention of the president of the Qalb Tounes party on political grounds, members believe that recourse to international courts could be a solution for his release. This is the next step that his supporters will take.

Former candidate for the 2019 presidential election

As a reminder, Karoui is the president of the "Qalb Tounes" party. He has already run for the presidential election in Tunisia in 2019. Even while in prison he tried his luck by posting his candidacy. Of course, he passed the ballot behind the bar. His supporters believed he would win the election. However, Kais Saied, his opponent, had the 70% of the vote who was later elected president of Tunisia.

In his opinion, he was prosecuted and arrested because of a plot by the ruling candidate to remove him from the ballot.
