Algeria aspires to join the BRICS, a group of emerging nations that also includes South Africa, Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the head of North Africa, made the announcement in public during a television interview that aired on Sunday, July 31.

The club, according to the president of Algeria, was a "powerful economic and political force" that enabled "a shift away from the pull of the two poles."

The bloc is responsible for more than 31 percent of global GDP and 42 percent of the world's population, according to the CIA's World Factbook. South Africa joined the group the most recently in 2011.

At the end of June, the leader participated in a BRICS video conference.

Algeria is a major player in the area, especially in terms of its energy resources, according to a French economist, but the process could take a while given the geopolitical volatility throughout the world.

The process of Algeria's entry into the BRICS could be very gradual given the global geopolitical instability, according to a senior French economist interviewed by a colleague of RFI. If Algeria is a heavyweight in the region, particularly for its energy resources which are of great interest to Russia and China.
