This Wednesday, April 28, the Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry, met with the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the acceleration of the peace process between the Israelis and the Palestinians, and to condemn the recent actions committed by Israeli extremist groups against Palestinians in Jerusalem.

Indeed, on April 24, Tor Wennesland spoke about the violent situation that occurred between Israelis and Palestinians in Jerusalem, where rockets were fired into Gaza. He pointed out that these provocative acts must stop immediately because these shots that were launched in the direction of Israeli population centers directly violate international law. Therefore, in this announcement he made, Tor Wennesland condemned all these acts of violence and called on all parties to show restraint.

As for Egypt, it plays an ambiguous role in this tense relationship between Israel and Palestine. It is the key actor in the mediation of this conflict. For years, Egypt has been involved in many Israeli and Palestinian affairs such as in 2014, when Cairo hosted both sides for negotiations to ease tensions.

Palestinian elections
The meeting also comes after Egyptian officials said the Palestinian authority was considering canceling its first elections citing Israel's refusal to allow voting in East Jerusalem.

However, Israel has remained silent on the issue and reassured European ambassadors that it would not prevent the vote.

Today, Egypt says it is still in talks with Israel to find a compromise, despite the failure of recent talks.
