France RESTRICTS VISA ISSUANCE FOR MOROCCAN, ALGERIAN AND TUNISIAN RESIDENTS

An unprecedented and drastic decision. France will tighten the conditions for obtaining visas for nationals of Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, according to the announcement of the government spokesman, Gabriel Attal, on Tuesday 28 September. These three countries refuse to issue the consular passes necessary for the return of immigrants turned away from France.

According to the spokesman's explanation, these countries do not accept to take back nationals that we do not want to and cannot keep in France. Thus, it is reported that there will be a decrease in the issuance of visas. A decrease of 50% for nationals from Morocco and Algeria and 33% for those from Tunisia.

The attitude of these countries undermines the effectiveness of deportations once the obligations to leave French territory (OQTF) have been issued.

According to Gabriel Attal, "there was a dialogue, then there were threats, and now this threat is being carried out".

The duration of the application of this rule was not specified. However, the government spokesperson indicated that this decision was taken a few weeks ago. Therefore, it will be enforced to push the countries concerned to change their policy and accept to deliver these consular laissez-passers.

France hopes that its reaction will be more cooperation with these three countries so that the migration rules are respected.

The implementation of this rule is therefore expected.
