GERMANY: Explosion at a chemical site in Leverkusen injures several people

A chemical site in Leverkusen exploded on Tuesday 27 July 2021. As a result, 04 people are missing, one person has died, the population is confined and the motorways are closed.

An explosion of unknown origin occurred yesterday at a chemical plant in Leverkusen in western Germany. This is a major damage according to the publication of the Cologne police on Twitter.

 According to media reports, the explosion occurred at a waste processing site.

Moreover, the accident caused a lot of smoke to be released. Thus, classified as an extreme danger according to the national disaster alert application Nina.

Isolation

Following the explosion, the fire brigade asked the residents in the vicinity to isolate themselves in a closed house. "Residents are asked to go to closed rooms and to keep doors and windows closed," the fire brigade message said. In addition, a fire brigade intervention was underway.

Thus, a measure to cut off the motorways was also taken to further avoid the serious damage caused by this accident.

According to the Chempark Leverkusen, a chemical company park, published on Twitter, 05 people are missing since the explosion, and several employees were injured, some of them seriously, but received direct treatment.

 A hotline has been set up for the public, whose telephone number is: Leverkusen 0214-2605 99333.

According to Kâplan's Twitter post, residents in the area are in no danger.  "The first air measurements carried out by the environmental protection units in the north of Cologne showed that there is currently no danger to the population. The measurements are continuing," the publication said.

On the other hand, other publications seem to be a bit pessimistic, saying that the chemicals would still be dangerous. And even if you take maximum precautions, accidents happen.
