The assassin who tried to kill the transitional president Assimi Goïta died in police custody on Sunday 25 July, according to a statement issued by the government. According to reports, the health of the attacker deteriorated while he was in hospital.

The cause of death remains unclear at this time. An autopsy has been ordered to find out.

As a reminder, the president of the transition Assimi Goïta was almost assassinated during the celebration of the Muslim holiday, Eid al-Adha, on Wednesday 20 July in the Grand Mosque of Bamako. A young man wearing jeans and a white shirt was suspected of the assassination. He tried to stab the president from behind with a knife but missed.

The act was stopped by the president's bodyguard and has since been in the hands of the Malian security services.

But even after the confirmation of the death of the assailant, his identity has not yet been revealed. The statement did not specify.

The investigation continues

An investigation has been launched since the attempted assassination of the president. But even if the person who could reveal all the names of his accomplices has died, the government will not abandon the investigation. Moreover, the Malian authorities are convinced that other people are involved in this case.

However, the investigation will still be difficult following the death of the alleged perpetrator. From now on, the investigation led by the government and the judiciary should be carried out with vigilance and transparency.
