RDC: Mastercard and Billetera collaborate to offer a digital payment solution

The spread of the Covid-19 has increased the use of mobile service to minimize contacts. Also, to facilitate payments. MasterCard and Billetera enter in business. Mastercard is an American company, with a global focus, specializing in electronic payment systems, according to the Mataf website. Billettera is also a leading digital payment technology entity located in Kenya. Mastercard has decided to cooperate with Billettera.

A collaboration to expand formal financial and digital services to unbanked and financially excluded people in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo). This project presents a wide range of digital payment solutions. The goal is to create payment solutions.

This agreement, according to the partners, will promote the acceptance of government services including water and electricity bills, taxes, housing rents, building permits, electronic visas, customs payments. It is a kind of support provided within the government in the country that aims to implement a digitization program.

The design of the acceptance solutions has been made to attract and open the online portals as well as the Postbank channels. This agreement provides for the implementation of a digital cashier called "e-citizen" which will be the first in the country. This is a main cashier that will be able to easily make payments to and from the government.  After that, there will also be one for each ministry that will also facilitate payments.

According to Arn Vogels, Head of Sector Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa at Mastercard, who remains optimistic that partnerships like this will help them achieve their goals. That is, to bring 1 billion people into the digital economy by 2025.  But a collaboration like this one between Mastercard and Billetera could increase financial inclusion in the DRC, according to Arn Vogels.
