SOUTH SUDAN: People demand the resignation of their presidents

The people have had enough. A dozen organisations including lawyers, women's and youth organisations are seeking to demonstrate and are urging the entire population to do so as well, yesterday, Monday 30 August 2021 across the country.

They accuse President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar of having put the country in a mess.  South Sudan is the second poorest country in the world with a GDP per capita of $323, according to the net newspaper. According to the World Bank, 82% of the people live in poverty even though the country is rich in oil reserves and receives aid from the international community.

So many factors of poverty

Many factors have led South Sudan to this situation. Namely, war, insecurity, corruption etc. Also, the disagreements between the two leaders of the country, the president and the vice president. "When they govern together, nothing moves! They don't agree on anything," complains Rajab Mohandis, of the People's Coalition for Civil Action. According to Mohandis, they fight when they are not together. Thus, they are both responsible for suffering, destruction and many civilian deaths.

Many peace agreements have been signed between the two leaders at every moment when they promise to work together. But once the agreements are forgotten, the disagreement starts again, until today, according to Rajab Mohandis.

New head, better than the current one

The last peace agreement between the two men took place in 2018. However, it did not achieve much, nothing was accomplished. On the other hand, it has once again blocked the political situation in the country, says civil society.  According to civil society, other people in the country will be able to govern the country better than them. It therefore calls for a change of power: "It is time to change, because our leaders have failed and we cannot continue like this".

On the other hand, according to civil society, the current president, Salva Kiir, is afraid of being ousted and is doing everything to sulk and end up paying the country back. Moreover, both have been the source of crimes against humanity. But civil society hopes that when they are no longer in the presidency, they will settle their accounts with justice.

That is why the organisations are calling on the population to demonstrate and push for the resignation of the leaders.

The government has not reacted to the situation. But the president's spokesman considers it a declaration of war.

As a reminder, the next election following the peace agreement is scheduled to take place in two years' time, in 2023.
