Sudan says coup attempt 'foiled

Khartoum said on Tuesday it had "failed" a coup attempt involving military officials and civilians linked to the regime of autocrat Omar al-Bashir, who was ousted from power two years ago by a popular revolt.

"A failed coup attempt, carried out by a group of armed forces officers and civilians from the former regime...was contained at dawn," Information Minister Hamza Baloul told state television.

"Eleven officers and several soldiers who participated in the failed plot" were arrested, the army reported. And Baloul said the situation was now "under control" as state media broadcast patriotic chants over and over again.

Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, head of the army and the Sovereign Council, went to the al-Shajara military camp (south of the capital), suspected of being the starting point of the rebellion.

"If it had succeeded, this attempt would have had destructive consequences for the army, the regular forces and the country," he said, addressing the soldiers.

The United States condemned the attempted putsch, denouncing "anti-democratic acts" and warning against "any outside interference", while UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned against anything that would undermine the "political transition" in Sudan.

For his part, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, encouraged all actors to "stand firmly by the legal authorities of the transition".

This is not the first attempt to target the transitional government formed after the ouster in April 2019 of Omar al-Bashir, who was overthrown after 30 years of undivided rule.
