A new prison in Switzerland is looking for people to come and sleep there; in order to better test its functioning before its opening in April.

The prison is intended primarily to accommodate people in custody or in pre-trial detention. Volunteers had until Sunday to apply. Two conditions were required: to be at least 18 years old and to live in the canton of Zurich. The testers can decide not to sleep in their cell or to shorten their stay, which is scheduled for March 24 to 27 inclusive.

Zürich-West prison can accommodate up to 124 people placed in police custody, for a maximum of 48 hours, specifies the prison website. 117 other places are allocated to pre-trial detention.

It is therefore not an institution in which inmates serve long sentences. According to Swissinfo, the prison was built, in part, following criticism of the conditions of detention in other prisons in the canton.

All these elements have been clarified by the Zurich law firm Steiger Légal, the website where candidates could apply are no longer accessible: registrations have been closed since this Sunday, February 13, 2022, Blick further indicates.
