Taiwan: independence without US support

After the virtual meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, US President Joe Biden, many issues were discussed on 17 November. The hottest issue was the question of Taiwan's independence. The United States has indicated that it would not approve of Taiwan's independence from China. A position that does not necessarily reflect actions on the ground.

Three hours of video conference between the two heads of state

Biden and Xi had a meeting by video conference and discussed for about three hours several topics including the Taiwan issue. At a press conference in New Hampshire, where he was promoting the recently signed $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill, Biden said that US policy towards Taiwan had not changed at all.

Our policy toward Taiwan is unchanged

Asked to clarify the US position on Taiwan, the president added that independence was not something his administration supported. "I said they should decide about Taiwan. Not us. And we are not encouraging independence, we are encouraging them to do exactly what the Taiwan law requires. That is what we are doing. Let them decide. Full stop. It's independent. It makes its own decisions," Biden added.

This statement comes at a time when tensions between Washington and Beijing have increased in recent months and the issue of Taiwan has not helped matters either. However, one could understand from these statements that the Island's ambition to completely detach itself from China will not have American support, as the US is Taiwan's most important partner.
