A train accident in the southwestern part of the Czech Republic, near Milavce, killed three people and injured dozens, some of whom are still being sought, according to Správa železnic, a state-owned company responsible for the Czech national railway network.

Tragedy occurred on the morning of Wednesday 04 August 2021, at around 8am local time (6am GMT). The accident was between a train of the German company Die Länderbahn GmbH, bearing the number Ex 351, which was connecting Munich to Prague, and a regional train which was connecting the Czech towns of Pizen and Domazlice.

Drivers of the two trains, both of Czech nationality, and a passenger on the regional train were the three people killed in the collision, according to the Czech emergency services. The passengers were evacuated from the trains.

Several German and Czech rescue workers were mobilised as quickly as possible and arrived at the scene of the accident. Four helicopters also provided assistance. The injured were taken directly to hospitals in the region. According to the information gathered, 07 people are in a critical condition.

Whose fault was it?

Czech Transport Minister Karal Havlicek blamed the German train Ex 351 as the main culprit. He said that the train had failed to observe a signal and that it was on its way to the scene of the accident. He considered the situation to be serious.

However, the German company said in a statement that the train traffic on the Czech side was under the responsibility of the Czech Railways.

Remedial work will start as soon as the investigation of the accident by the Railway Inspectorate is completed.
