VAR: the weather condition could favour the fire

The forest in the Var has been devastated by fire because of the rise in temperature. The spread of fire is possible.

A fire occurred on Monday afternoon, north-east of Toulon and burnt more than 6,300 ha of forest in the Maures massif and also affected part of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. As a result, 02 people died.

However, at the moment, this fire is not yet controlled and could still evolve given the favourable weather conditions according to the announcement of the commander of the fire brigade's emergency operations, Loïc Lambert, on Thursday 19 August 2021. He said that "the fire is not fixed but we count on the conditions of the day to announce it when we are sure".

According to Commander Laumbert, the fire did not progress during the night. He also said that the rescue workers had joined forces to save the Garde-Freinet and Vidauban sectors.

The president of the Fire and Rescue Service, Dominique Lain, confirmed what Commander Laumbert had said about the cooler weather that calmed their spirits a little. "The wind has died down and the temperatures have dropped slightly".

Controlling the fire

The aim of the fire brigade and the firefighters is to completely eliminate all hot spots that could cause the fire to flare up again.

Precautionary measures have been taken. About 10,000 tourists and some residents have been evacuated since Monday evening. But since Wednesday, the 1,300 holidaymakers from the PachaCaïd campsite in La Môle Village, who had taken refuge in a gymnasium in Bormes-les-Mimosas, have been able to return to their tents and mobile homes.

Because of climate change and global warming, some countries have suffered the consequence. There are fires in Greece, Athens, Spain... from the beginning of this summer.
