Madagascar: the opposition organizes a "sarom-bilany" demonstration

This Wednesday, April 21, a preparatory meeting was organized at Magro Tanjombato by the Secretary General of the TIM political party, Rina Randriamasinoro, and the deputy of Antsimondrano, Alain Ratsimbazafy.

Indeed, the latter wish to organize this Friday, April 23 in Antananarivo a demonstration, which they named "sarom-bilany". They are calling on the people of Antananarivo to make noise by using pot lids and kitchen utensils, whistles, horns and shouts to protest against the health measures announced by the President of the Malagasy Republic, Andry Rajoelina, in his last televised statement.

For the opposition, these measures they have taken for the management of the Covid-19 pandemic in Madagascar, are incoherent, thoughtless and senseless. They find "absurd" the closure of places of worship and the suspension of school activities while supermarkets and markets are allowed to open. Apart from that, they question the total confinement during the weekend and want the population to circulate freely.

As for the supporters of the ruling power, they qualify this demonstration as a call to rebellion. On social networks, Internet users began to criticize the intentions of the opposition, and consider these initiatives as non-constructive. Then, on some publications, some observers believe that organizing a protest demonstration in the middle of a health crisis is not a priority at all. On the contrary, the gatherings could generate and increase the risks of rapid spread of the virus. Observers thus find that instead of protesting, the opposition should above all encourage the population to apply sanitary measures and to make its contribution to protect the Malagasy people from the coronavirus.

Nevertheless, during the demonstrations of this Friday, the forces of order will be present to avoid possible overflows.
