ALGERIA: New Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane to solve economic crisis

Finance Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane was appointed prime minister on Wednesday 30 June, following the results of the early legislative elections held on 12 June, according to a presidential statement. "In accordance with the provisions of the constitution, the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune, has appointed Mr. Aïmene Benabderrahmane as Prime Minister," the statement said.

AÏmene Benabderrahmane, 54, succeeds Abdelaziz Djerad, 67. He has been Minister of Finance since 23 June 2020. But he was already in the field of finance before, since 1991. Inspector of Finance in 2004 and Chief Inspector General of Finance in 2006. He was Deputy Director of Control in the General Inspectorate of Finance from December 2001 to March 2010.

Solving the economic crisis

On the one hand, the resolution of the socio-economic crisis existing in Algeria at the moment, makes the main mission of Aïmene Benabderrahmane. This is the wish of the president, Abdelmajdid Tebboune. The latter aims at eliminating the serious economic crisis that undermines the first economy of the Maghreb.

Abdelaziz Djerad, in office since December 28, has not succeeded in resolving the crisis situation regarding the oil rent that makes the main economy of the Maghreb. As a result, he presented his resignation and that of his government to the president on 24 June.

On the other hand, the new Prime Minister is also responsible for continuing the political and civil society consultations to form the government as soon as possible.

President Tebboune thanked the work of his Prime Minister. The latter has led the government under difficult conditions, especially in the period of Covid-19. However, he publicly expressed his discontent and dissatisfaction with the inaction of the Djerad government in January.
