COVID-19 USA: Pfizer/BioNTech seeks approval for third dose of vaccine

The fight against the virus is getting worse. And each country has its own way of dealing with it in order to avoid the spike phase.  For the Pfizer/BiioNTech alliance, it plans to move to the third dose of the anti-covid19 vaccine. To do this, the company said in a statement that it will begin applying next week for approval of the third dose of its vaccine in the United States and also in Europe.

The third vaccine, they said, is intended to boost the immune protection of people already vaccinated with the first two doses.

According to the explanations, Pfizer and BioNTech have obtained encouraging results from ongoing trials for a third dose of the current vaccine. The company will send these data to the FDA, EMA and other regulatory authorities in the coming week.

A third dose will be needed

According to data from the preliminary study conducted, a booster dose applied 6 months after the second dose has a consistent safety profile, while eliciting high levels of neutralising antibodies against the virus, including the Beta variant, which emerged in South Africa. The levels achieved are 5 to 10 times those observed after the initial 2 doses.

The results of the studies will be published in a scientific journal, the two companies said. According to the companies, their vaccines have shown good laboratory results against the Delta variant. Therefore, a third dose would be able to boost immunity against this new variant.  The press release also stated that a third dose may be needed between 6 and 12 months after vaccination.

At the moment, tests are underway to confirm these assumptions.

Officials concerned about whether or not to accept the case, such as the U.S. drug agency, the FDA, and the main federal public health agency, issued a joint statement Thursday evening saying they were reviewing whether or not a booster was needed.

On the one hand, local health officials say that "Americans who have been fully vaccinated do not need a booster at this time." But on top of that, they added that they are ready to administer the booster doses when the science is proven.
