Police and residents of Mpolonjeni in Mbabane, woke up to the gruesome discovery of a 63-year-old woman last Wednesday. She was allegedly attacked, murdered and buried in a shallow grave. On Thursday morning, a contingent of police officers led by Regional Crime Branch Officer (RCBO) Sikhumbuzo Fakudze and residents combed the property for the elderly woman, identified as Thembi Mkhaliphi. Her relatives had not been able to locate her. Upon arriving at the scene, police searched everywhere until they were drawn to a newly cultivated area under an avocado tree, where they began digging and found her body buried less than five meters from her house. After digging for about a meter and a half, they came across clothes believed to belong to the elderly woman and finally her body, which showed bruises, while her ankles were chained.

Burglary and murder

When the officers inspected the interior of her home, they found that nothing appeared to have been stolen by the assailants. They did note, however, that her silver Mazda 3, license plate SSD 660 AS, and her cell phone were missing.

Recounting how his mother was found, Thami Dlamini said that after trying unsuccessfully to reach her on her cell phone since Monday, the family physically went to see her Tuesday night. Dlamini said his mother lived alone and they only visited her occasionally. According to Dlamini, he was called by one of his uncles, who desperately wanted to talk to his mother but could not reach her on Monday. "I tried to contact him several times on Monday. However, his number was not available," Dlamini said. He said his uncle suggested that he physically visit her because they wanted to deliver an important message.

Still no word, Dlamini went to his mother's house on Tuesday night after work with a friend. He said when they got to the door, they found it locked and tried to yell to get her attention, but there was no answer. He said he then remembered he also had his keys and used them to open the gate and enter. Dlamini stated that as they got closer, they realized that the lights in some rooms of the house were on, but as they approached the porch, they were confronted with blood stains.
