Madagascar: export of 1.5 kilos of gold foiled from January to April 2023

Trafficking detected

During the presentation of the activity report of the Ministry of Economy and Finance to the Members of Parliament, Minister Rindra Hasimbelo Rabarinirinarison highlighted the numerous actions undertaken by the Ministry, in particular through Customs, to ensure the protection of national wealth. She stressed her department's determination to dismantle trafficking networks.

As reported in a Malagasy newspaper, over the period January to April 2023, the customs administration succeeded in detecting several attempts to illegally export gold-bearing substances, totaling a weight of 1.5 kilos. The report also includes the following offences: trafficking in 952g of methamphetamine, 1,013g of cocaine, 9.174kg of marijuana, 2.250kg of heroin and 2.350kg of amphetamine.

1,235 frauds in 2022

In 2022, Customs succeeded in detecting a total of 1,235 frauds, resulting in a loss of duties and taxes amounting to 96.79 billion ariary (around €20,500,000). Customs also achieved excellent performance in terms of customs revenue collection, reaching 3,465 billion ariary (over €740,000,000), exceeding forecasts of 3,394.2 billion ariary (over €725,000,000).

This achievement rate demonstrates the effectiveness of customs revenue collection efforts. Between January and April 2023, Customs also managed to collect 1,105 billion ariary in revenue (over €236,000,000).
