Confusion has set in among herders in Taraba State. They were frightened to see 40 cattle die in the vicinity last Sunday. According to them, these cattle ate a poisonous grass, called "killer grass", which flourishes on these lands.

All the cattle belong to a herder in Gamgam village in Bali Local Government Area

The incident occurred around 11:00 am on Sunday. The boy, who was leading the herd, drove them to the grassland. Soon after, he observed that the cattle ate the poisonous grass.

A witness from the village, Ali Bello, told that a few hours after the cattle ate the grass, 40 of the 200 cattle died.

He said the grass is found in some places in the state and it is difficult to identify the species of the grass, especially at the beginning of the rains when the animals rush to eat fresh grass.

Bello said Ja'I and his family, shortly after the incident, migrated with the remaining herds to another location to prevent a repeat of the incident.

He said such incidents are recorded from time to time and that poisoned grass has always been a nightmare for herders.

"As I speak, all the herders in this area have migrated out of the area to avoid their herds eating the poisonous grass."
