Somalia: a Sunday under high tension

This Sunday, in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu, opposition supporters took to the streets in a protest against President Farmajo.

It was a tense day, where the special forces of the federal army blocked access to the main roads into the capital. They clashed with revolting opposition soldiers, determined to challenge the extension of President Framajo's term in office. However, the most violent moments of the confrontations occurred in the late afternoon, when gunfire rang out late into the night in the capital. According to one of the opposition leaders, Abdirahaman Abdishakur Warsame, his house was targeted.

President Framajo's official term of office should have expired in February. However, without holding an election, parliament extended the term by two years because of the deep political crisis the country has been experiencing since the second half of 2020. For the opposition, this is an illegal decision, and as a result, they want Farmajo out. During the clashes, one of the demonstrators said that "we tried to organize peaceful anti-government demonstrations several times, but the government did not allow us. Now we have troops with us and we can demonstrate. "

In the face of such unrest, the British Embassy and the European Union have expressed concern. Political actors are hoping that talks for the organization of a presidential election will resume.
