Two adults and three children died in a burning car. They were all travelling together in the car. They were burnt beyond recognition. A vehicle crashed into theirs on the N17 between Ermelo and Davel in Mpumalanga. The accident occurred at around 1am on Thursday when a Toyota Corolla collided with the rear of a Ford.

The family in the Ford wanted to go to Ermelo

Mpumalanga Department of Safety, Security and Community Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi was at the scene. He said indications were that the Toyota Sedan was travelling from Davel to Ermelo. The Ford, he said, was apparently stopped on the side of the road in the direction from Davel to Ermelo when the Toyota hit it.

"The deceased were burnt beyond recognition. On impact, the Ford sedan immediately burst into flames. The passengers as well as the driver died instantly. Three children were among the deceased. "One of the children was sitting on his mother's lap in the back seat when the accident occurred. "The driver of the Toyota sedan and a passenger were seriously injured," said Mr Moeti.

Cause of the accident still unknown

The cause of the accident is not known at this stage, and Moeti said the police working with the department's safety engineering unit had already started the investigation.
Mpumalanga MEC Vusi Shongwe called on motorists to be extra vigilant, especially at night when visibility is poor. He said the roads were becoming increasingly dangerous, mainly due to human behaviour.

"Despite the endless messages being put out by every platform available, people don't seem to take the importance of using the road safely to heart, judging by the number of these fatal accidents."

"We will continue to work hard as a department to implement road safety education programmes and enforcement operations. Our enforcement officers will continue to apply zero tolerance to the behaviour of bad drivers," said Mr Shongwe.
