South Africa: Gang attacks KZN jewellery store in broad daylight

A gang of 10 armed men smashed the windows of a jewellery store in the Westville shopping centre yesterday morning, marking yet another robbery in a KwaZulu-Natal shopping centre.

The men apparently smashed the windows while the jewellery store employees were working, a scene that was captured on video by witnesses from a distance.

Witnesses were shocked when the men stole an undisclosed amount of jewellery and a box of vouchers before fleeing in a getaway vehicle.

Video of the incident made the rounds on social media, showing the suspects brandishing their firearms while stuffing their bags, according to the Highway Mail.

As witnesses tried to make sense of the scene, the suspects fled and the lone security guard was seen exiting the shop before going down the escalator.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Constable Thenjisiwe Ngcobo said it appeared that the suspects were heading towards KwaDabeka after their escape.

Although the men were armed at the time, fortunately no shots were fired. A robbery case has been opened at the Westville Police Station.
