A car accident occurred in Monte Verde, Sao Vicente, on May 18. A Hiace vehicle, resulted in the death of a 40 year old man. The scene was very gruesome. The vehicle, according to the regional commander of the National Police in Sao Vicente, João Santos, fell from a height of "more than 300 meters". Only one occupant, a 40-year-old man, was on board. The driver's name was António Dias. The authorities came to the scene to see the damage. The victim was not so lucky therefore.

A very curious accident for the police force

According to the authorities, the accident is not very clear. There are doubts about whether it was "accidental or intentional". The concern is that the driver was not under the influence of anything dangerous. However, the local residents have already appealed to the authorities about the poor condition of the secondary access roads. They have noted that the road puts people's lives at risk. They have asked that these roads be rehabilitated before creating serious accidents. The police have already taken charge of the investigation. They will try to clarify the events that led to this accident.

The people implore the State to see the bad condition of the secondary roads

The situation of the secondary roads worries the inhabitants of Porto Novo. These roads are the means of connection between several communities in the municipality of Porto Novo. They warn that the roads are too bad and sometimes impassable during the rainy season.

This is the case of a path in Alto Mira, which specifically connects the villages of Chã de Fora and Gorado, which was destroyed during the 2016 floods and "endangered the lives of people", including children, who are forced to transit on this path.

The complaint comes from residents of Alto Mira, who alert the municipality of Porto Novo to the "urgent need" to repair this path to avoid accidents, as it is a very busy trail.

For the resident Aderlino Fortes, it is "a very worrying situation" that has already been denounced many times by the population, without the competent authorities having yet made the necessary interventions.

The danger is real according to the residents and people who frequent the road

Maria Silva, another resident, said that it is a "very dangerous road", which was damaged "years ago", which constitutes a danger to the lives of people, especially for children who constantly walk along it.

"We appeal to the city hall of Porto Novo to repair the road today, because tomorrow it could be late. Do not let someone die first, so they can take precautions later," said the resident, who added that the local authorities are already aware of the situation.

The recovery of the "extensive and quite degraded" network of secondary roads in the municipality of Porto Novo is, for the municipality, "a major challenge," promising to mobilize partners to improve the condition of these access roads.

In a statement, the municipality of Porto Novo explained that the "vast network of secondary roads" that the municipality has was "very degraded" after last year's rains, and that at present, "one of the main challenges" is to find partners for the recovery of these roads.

Despite the lack of resources, the executive of the council says to proceed with "small interventions" in some roads, especially in Alto Mira, for the safety of citizens and visitors who use these roads.
