A shooting incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Uganda. The assailants attacked the car of the former Ugandan Minister of Public Works and Transport, General Edward Katumba Wamala. He survived the assassination attempt which took place in a suburb of the capital Kampala. His daughter Brenda Wamala Nantongo and his driver Haruna Kayondo were victims and died on the spot. The car in which they were travelling was shot at.

The attackers were four armed men

The ex-minister and his daughter were in the car with the driver. The three were travelling to Kampala in a vehicle with military plates. They were intercepted by four armed men on motorbikes who shot at the car before fleeing, witnesses said.

According to the video that circulated on social media, General Katumba is seen walking with blood-stained clothes.

Reports indicate that they were on their way to the funeral of their close relative in Najjanankumbi, along the Entebbe road.

The investigation is already underway

Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso, the army spokesperson, confirmed the death of the two people. He said the army and the police are assisting in the investigation.

First responders took the minister to a hospital in Kampala for treatment. Several government officials, including Speaker Jacob Oulanya and his deputy Anita Among, were camped at the hospital while Wamala was receiving treatment.

Presidential spokesperson Lindah Nabusaayi said President Yoweri Museveni is already aware of the assassination attempt. He will make a statement later today about it when he can.

General Wamala was Minister of Works and Transport in the former cabinet that was dissolved last month when President Museveni's fifth term expired. General Wamala is one of several candidates hoping to be reappointed to the next cabinet, which is expected to be announced this month.

A far from ordinary assassination attempt

The assassination attempt was carried out in the same style as those that led to the death of over 28 people. According to observers, senior government officials have always been targeted over the past seven years.

Among those killed were 23 Muslim clerics, former MP Ibrahim Abiriga, former police spokesman Andrew Felix Kaweesi, prosecutor Joan Kagezi and police officer Muhammad Kirumira, among others.

Following a spate of killings, the government invested heavily in CCTV cameras installed in the Kampala metropolitan area, with President Museveni claiming that the cameras would help track and identify criminals.
