UNITED STATES: IDA storm in New York kills 44

Double blow for New York. Hit by Hurricane Ida and then ravaged by floods.

New York has been hit by torrential rains that have caused historic flooding just after storm Ida hit. As a result, 44 people have been officially declared dead in the areas by the authorities. Faced with the situation, the American president, Joe Biden, declared a state of emergency in New York. Thus he announced, on Thursday 02 September, the implementation of federal aid to support the region which suffered damage caused by Hurricane Ida.

Trapped

The police counted a dozen deaths in the American economic and cultural megalopolis. Most of them could be trapped and drowned in their basements, rudimentary and sometimes insalubrious dwellings set up at the foot of buildings in Manhattan, Queens or Brooklyn.

In upmarket Westchester County, on the waterfront north of Manhattan, three people who tried to get out of their cars drowned on Thursday night, according to reports. The city was still covered in muddy water overnight.

In Connecticut, a police officer who was monitoring traffic died.

The worst consequences in New Jersey, where at least 23 people were killed in the natural disaster, according to Governor Phill Murphy.

Several victims were trapped in their cars and probably drowned.

And near Philadelphia, 04 people lost their lives.

Still in the flood

The National Weather Service (NWS) recorded 80 mm of rain in just one hour in Central Park. This is a historic amount recorded in the country.

Dozens of cars in Westchester were submerged to the roof on Thursday. The basements of traditional coastal homes were submerged by 60 cm of water.

The areas and city hit by the flooding are currently under a state of emergency.

US President Joe Biden has announced federal aid to help the flood-stricken areas.
