Rwanda and the UK are proud of their migration partnership.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame met with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in London on Thursday, ahead of the coronation of King Charles III.

The two leaders discussed their migration partnership. Rishi Sunak said the UK and Rwanda were "at the forefront" of global migration challenges. The UK has entered into a multi-million-pound partnership with Rwanda to tackle the number of people arriving in Britain through unauthorised channels, including by boat. The £140 million (€160 million) deal will see some migrants who entered illegally through the Channel sent to Kigali if they cannot be deported to their home countries.

The plan to send migrants to the East African country - a policy deemed legal by High Court judges - has so far been blocked by legal action and no flights have taken off.

It is part of wider proposals to discourage illegal immigration, including housing refugees in barges off the English coast while their asylum claims are processed.

Later in their conversation, Mr Sunak expressed his "sympathy" for the floods in Rwanda which have killed at least 129 people.
